The LA (Language
Arts) Quest Program
The LA (Language Arts) Quest program was created in
2001, spawning from our belief that the study of English
as a second language is an ongoing process. In our experience,
we have seen many ESL students excited about studying
English when they first arrive in the United States,
because of their strong desire to communicate. After
the first year, however, we have seen these same students
become bored and frustrated with their studies, because
they failed to have a vision or goal for themselves.
The LA Quest Program is yearlong, and typically begins
at the start of the academic school year. It covers
four areas of Language Arts: Vocabulary, Writing, Reading,
and Listening and Responding. It is an optional program,
and students who choose to take on this challenge, select
one of the possible achievement levels: Certificate,
Medallion, and Trophy. Each level requires students
to complete projects in each of the four areas of Language
Arts that are part of the program. At the end of the
program, students receive a certificate, medallion,
or trophy at the annual awards ceremony and barbeque
event. We believe that this program fosters a sense
of camaraderie and healthy competition among the students,
thus motivating and encouraging them to continue to
improve their language arts skills. |
