Our ESL Division offers a comprehensive program for
second language learners, with experienced instructors
and Private, Semi-Private and Group Lessons available
for students of all ages. Our goal is to help students
build a strong foundation of English language skills
so they can continue building and expanding their communication
skills and knowledge throughout their lives.
Private lessons give students the opportunity to
work one-on-one with an instructor on all academic
areas, especially those areas that need t he most
attention. The instructor will make every effort
to tailor each lesson to help the student gain the
skills needed to succeed academically. Each student’s
program is carefully planned for optimum results.
Semi-private lessons are ideal for those who prefer
the interaction with, and support of, another student.
The instructor will plan the lessons to make certain
that each student receives individual attention,
while maintaining a cooperative learning environment.
SLK's
individual reading programs are determined by the
student’s level and learning style. The reading
programs consist of phonics and pronunciation, vocabulary
building (including idioms and figurative language),
and reading comprehension skills.
Through acquiring reading strategies that are essential
in analyzing and evaluating nonfiction and fiction,
students will develop from passive to active readers.
Some of these strategies include: sequencing, finding
details, understanding the main idea, cause and
effect, predicting outcomes using clues, and understanding
characters.
Our
Individual writing programs begin with learning
the basics: parts of speech, sentence structure,
and awareness of standard usage. Beginning and intermediate
level students use ESL (English as a Second Language)
grammar textbooks to learn form, meaning, and usage
of basic structures in English. While learning basic
structures and patterns, we begin our instruction
on standard grammar skills (punctuation, capitalization,
parts of speech, and paragraph development) Students
develop independent writing skills as they learn
to apply both the ESL and the English-Language Arts
standards in their writing.
SLK's program encourages it students to speak
English with their tutor during their time of
instruction. Through consistent conversations
in English, the student will develop improved
language skills that will enable them to speak
with confidence.
